After 13 years of designing kitchens for other people – I can’t tell you how excited I was to actually start planning my own kitchen. Before we even put an offer in on the house – I got to work thinking of a way to update the floor plan to accommodate the kitchen I knew I would want to fit into our new house. We knew we loved the neighbourhood – but the original main floor plan was choppy and cramped with a laundry room, closet and a few other little walls in the way.
The Plan:
I knew I wanted to be able to accommodate a large island with seating – so getting rid of the front hall closet was a must. With the laundry room relocated to the second floor – I wanted to create a bit of privacy to where the powder room entrance is. I planned to frame in a new area for custom cabinetry closets which also gave us a new wall to relocate some of the HVAC into that feeds the second floor. In order to accommodate the ideal kitchen layout – we closed in one window that faced our neighbour’s house to accommodate a 36″ Dual Fuel range. We raised the bay window at the back of the house so that the sink would face outside. Though we loved the extra ceiling height that the sunken living room gave us at the front of the house – we raised it so that the furniture layout would work better.

The Inspiration:
Though I’ll always love a white kitchen – after 13 years of designing them and 7 years of living with one – I knew I wanted to do something different. Knowing that we were going with minimal uppers and that all of our walls would be painted white – I knew that going dark with the cabinets would add some contrast and depth – so we opted for a black & wood cabinet scheme. Though I love the look of a natural & overly veined marble – I knew that both marble and porcelain would be too high maintenance for Matt to deal with – so we opted for a Cambria Quartz top with some natural veining.
